Abel Spalding

Coach Spalding is the first ever Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Coach for Spurgeon College. He has played a pivotal role in shaping the future of this newly added sport for the Knights.

He grew up in Columbus, Indiana, and attended Indiana University. During his time there, he was a team manager for the Indiana University Cross Country and Track & Field team and the coach for the Run Club at Indiana University. Both groups experienced success at this time, with the school program achieving multiple top-three Big Ten Championship finishes in cross country and track and run club individuals earning 9 All-American finishes in cross country and track. Since graduating, Coach Spalding has been working with Run Free Training, an online coaching service working with runners from all experience levels, training for events ranging from sprints to ultramarathons.

Coach Spalding has a degree in Exercise Science with a minor in coaching and is a USATF Level 1 Certified coach. He lives in Kansas City with his wife Amelia.
