Expected Slip-n-Slide turns into Landslide Victory for the Knights

Expected Slip-n-Slide turns into Landslide Victory for the Knights

Summary:

On Sept. 22nd, the rain dumped all morning. Students at Spurgeon worried that the game would be canceled, but due to the distance that Fisk had traveled (from Tennessee), the game was determined to go on. By noon, the rain had cleared up, the sun was shining, and Spurgeon fans eagerly awaited the match. There were 49 people in attendance. The Knights played strong, communicating well with each other and quickly taking the lead. They maintained their advantage, pressing on while Fisk grew more and more frustrated. In the end, the Knights firmly took the win.

How it Happened:

  • The game began with the Knights instantly moving toward Fisk's goal. Within the first ten minutes, there were fouls on both sides, illustrating the intensity of the game to come.

  • At 13:10, Adwall Malunga scored the first goal for the Knights. In the next two minutes, there was a foul and a shot on goal. Then, Grant Smith scored the second goal, assist by Jackson Edwards

  • Fisk took possession of the ball and hurried to the Knights' goal, but Knights' goalie Ronnie Godwin saved the shot. The rest of the first period followed a clear pattern of foul, shot by Spurgeon, offside, substitute, shot by Spurgeon, foul, and so on. The Knights kept the heat up with riveting determination. Frustration mounted through the pattern, and a Spurgeon player received a yellow card.

  • The second period opened with the same intensity: fouls and a yellow card on another Spurgeon player. At 58:18, Ezra Broadus scored the third goal for the Knights. Fisk's team struggled to regroup, scoring their goal about ten minutes later.

  • Fisk's push was short-lived. Spurgeon regained the ball and made two shots on the goal. Fisk again won the ball, but Ronnie Godwin made another save for the Knights. The back and forth continued down the length of the field.

  • At 76:16, Elijah Tling scored the fourth and final goal, assist by Jackson Mohn. The game continued until time, with the Knights' clear and inevitable victory ringing in anticipation through the rest of the plays.

Highlights:

  • Though there were star players, the game overall left the impression of the Knights' teamwork and group effort. The burden of the game fell equally across the team, showcasing the growth in the players' understanding of each other.

  • Adwell Malunga, Ezra Broadus, Grant Smith, and Elijah Tling each scored a goal. For Elijah and Ezra, these were their first goals of the season—an exciting achievement for these players at this home game.
