Women's Soccer's Staunch Defense Paves the Way for Victory

The Knights' Women's soccer team left Friday to drive up for two games over the weekend in Milwaukee. For their game against Mount Mary, there were only 40 people in attendance almost all there for the opposing team. Despite this, the Knights held the line of defense, striking forward and securing the win.
How it Happened:

The game began with both teams fiercely taking the field. Mount Mary made a number of shots on goal within the first ten minutes, keeping Spurgeon on their toes.

The next ten minutes, the shots on goals on both sides of the field evened out. Both teams stayed tight on defense, but eventually, Mount Mary scored against the Knights.

At 34:58, less than five minutes after Mount Mary's goal, Shae Turner secured a goal for the Knights with assist by Nina Worley. She immediately fired another shot on their goal, but Mount Mary took back the ball and hurried down the field. Their shot went wide, and Spurgeon took back possession.

At 41:07, Shae Turner scored again. Mount Mary's frustration showed in fouls as the first period came to a close.

The second half started with Mount Mary still fueled by frustration and aggression, but the Knights kept their cool and steadfastly held their ground. Shae Turner continued hustling down the field to make shots on Mount Mary's goal.

As the second half wore on, Mount Mary made multiple substitutions, trying to get a crack in the Knights' defense. The Knights' goalie, Hannah Montgomery, stayed on her "A game," despite the shots coming her way.

The rest of the game, the Knights worked hard at defense as Mount Mary kept trying. In the end, Spurgeon's focus and resolve won the day.

The Knights' goalie, Hannah Montgomery, broke her past record in number of saves in a game. Her past record was 16 saves in the Faith Bible game. Against Mount Mary, she saved 20 shots on goal. Her work was absolutely critical to the game.

Shae Turner once again shone, making 2 goals and having 8 shots on goal through the game. She kept Mount Mary busy on their end of the field.

The whole team communicated well and displayed their cool determination, an especially notable feat at away games.

The women's team had a rematch with Faith Baptist Bible on Sept. 28th, holding a tie 2-2. Their next game is Oct. 7th, at Dallas Christian College.
