Volleyball Seniors and Founding Coach Celebrated in Home Win  

Summary: 

The game opened by highlighting the seniors on the volleyball team, AJ Adrian and Samantha Dobbs. Both players have been key to the team's culture for the years that they have played and are crucial to the culture of the school as a whole. Additionally, it was officially announced that Coach Evie Stanton would be moving on to new opportunities. Coach Stanton is the founding coach for the volleyball team and has served Spurgeon College Athletics through her skills and leadership for three years. Spurgeon College is forever grateful to Coach Stanton for her work and excited to see what comes!  

After recognizing the seniors and Coach Stanton, the match began. 

How it Happened: 

• The first set opened with Kansas Christian in the lead by two. However, as soon as the Knights got the serve, they maintained control and stayed ahead for the rest of the set. They won the game 25-11.   

• The second set played out much the same as the first. The game started with the Kansas Christian taking the lead and immediately losing it. The Knights' unity was highly evident as every member of the team worked to set each other up for success. They won the set 25-16. 

• In the third game, the Knights were riding high on their successes. It opened with a kill by Lizzie Deaton and two kills from Timry Goodman. However, Kansas Christian's desperation drove them to surpass the Knights at the 9th point. Yet, the Knights quickly realized their mistake in underestimating their opponents and regrouped. The Knights won the match with three kills in a row from Timry Goodman, Lizzie Deaton, and Josephine Dull.  

Highlights: 

• Typically, there are clear offensive match leaders, and though Lizzie Deaton, Hannah Hudson, and Janie Wilson were at the top again, almost every member of the team made at least two kills, aside from Hailey Mueller and Samantha Dobbs. 

• Samantha Dobbs, Timry Goodman, and Hailey Mueller led in terms of digs, with Dobbs making 13 digs and both Goodman and Mueller making 8. 

• Lizzie Deaton, AJ Adrian, and Hailey Mueller each made three service aces.  

• This game allowed every member of the team to shine, bringing a stunning close to the Seniors' careers.

The Volleyball 2023 season has now closed! The Knights had one more home game, which they lost. Then they went on to regionals, where Lizzie Deaton and Timry Goodman received all-region awards for their performance this season. Be on the lookout for more news on the 2024 season!
