Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Magdalene Jones

A Riveting Test of Endurance

A Riveting Test of Endurance

Summary:

The Knights' Women's Soccer took to their home field on Sept. 14th. Given the time of day, fewer fans attended, but some of the Knights' fiercest supporters were there to cheer them on. The game was expected to be a challenging one. In the last match between the Knights and Faith Bible, the Knights were dealt a crushing defeat. Additionally, the Knights were playing without subs, as a few players had injuries. Yet the Knights came together with a brilliant display of strength, teamwork, and defense. Though the game ended in Faith's favor, the Knights played beautifully and never backed down.

How it Happened:

  • The game started with Faith scoring five minutes in. The following ten minutes, the Knights were hammered with shots on goal. The Knights' goalie, Hannah Montgomery, saved each one. Maggie Howard also made a defensive block for the Knights. Haeley Gallegos made a shot on Faith's goal but was thwarted.

  • At 17:30, Shae Turner scored the first goal for the Knights, bringing the points to a tie. The Knights were thrilled, but just a few minutes later, Faith scored again.

  • The pummeling against the Knights' defense resumed, but the Knights held together. At 40:46, the Knights turned the play onto Faith's side of the field. Shae Turner scored a second time with an assist by Haeley Gallegos

  • By halftime, another Knight was injured and had to come off the field. It was a grim outlook for the Knights, but they rallied their determination.

  • The second half began with the Knights turning the tables on Faith, sending three shots at the goal, which were blocked or intercepted. Then Faith pushed down the field to the Knights' goal, hammering goalie Hannah Montgomery again.

  • For over fifteen minutes, the rhythm was the same. Faith corner kick, Faith shot on goal, Knights' save. Again and again. Montgomery was like a wall, supported by the other players like Ellen Osborne, who also made a defensive save.

  • With only two minutes left in the game, the Knights having fought valiantly despite being down two players when already playing without subs, Faith scored. Though the game's outcome was unfavorable to the Knights, it was an intense show of their defensive capabilities.

Highlights:

  • Hannah Montgomery had sixteen saves, relentless in her position as goalie. She kept her composure despite the tension and intensity in the goalie box.

  • In terms of defense, Faith made a total of 21 shots on goal but were only successful with 3 of them. Between Montgomery and the rest of the defense, the Knights were nearly impenetrable.

  • Shae Turner and Haeley Gallegos again shone on the offensive side, with Turner making three shots on goal (two scores) and Gallegos assisting and having her own shot on goal.

  • Ultimately, the whole team played with admirable skill, energy, and absolute endurance in a long, hard game. The teamwork and sportsmanship of the Spurgeon Knights were highlighted once again.

Up Next:
