The Spurgeon College women's volleyball team opened their 2025 season with a doubleheader at the Mathena Student Center in Gladstone, Missouri. While the Knights dropped both matches to Calvary and MidAmerica Nazarene, the young squad showed flashes of potential and resilience that point to a bright future.
Match 1 – Calvary 3, Spurgeon 0
The Knights opened play against Calvary University in front of a lively home crowd. Despite falling in straight sets (25–21, 25–17, 25–17), Spurgeon competed with energy and determination throughout.
Though the scoreboard favored Calvary, the Knights displayed grit and flashes of chemistry, especially in a competitive first set.
Match 2 – MidAmerica Nazarene 3, Spurgeon 0
In the evening matchup, Spurgeon faced a talented MidAmerica Nazarene squad and battled hard in all three sets. After dropping the first two frames (25–13, 25–16), the Knights fought back with their strongest effort of the day in set three, pushing the Pioneers before falling 25–23.
Vivien Baker tallied 8 kills, while Madison Moyer added 5 with a .167 hitting percentage. Naomi Gibler and Josephine Dull each contributed at the net, and Grace Miller provided steady passing with 9 assists. The Knights demonstrated resilience and growth, particularly in their ability to adjust and challenge their opponents late in the match.
Building for the Season Ahead
Although Spurgeon begins the season 0–2, the team's youth and depth were on display throughout the doubleheader. With several underclassmen already making key contributions, the Knights are laying the foundation for steady improvement as the season unfolds. The fight and promise shown in these early contests suggest that brighter days are ahead for Spurgeon volleyball.
