Spurgeon College Announces Launch of Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Programs

Spurgeon College is excited to announce the addition of Men's and Women's Track & Field, expanding the athletics department to eight total sports and continuing the College's commitment to holistic student-athlete development.

The new programs are scheduled to begin competition in Spring 2027, giving Spurgeon athletics a presence throughout the entire academic year. The addition creates new opportunities for current and future student athletes, including those who will be able to compete in track/field events alongside other sports.

"It's a very exciting time here at Spurgeon College," said the Athletic Director, Logan Stutz. "Starting up a Men's and Women's Track & Field program will be a blessing in many different ways. We will have sports operating for the whole school year, many student athletes will be able to use the track program to compete along with their other sport, and the school has a new sport to get behind and cheer for as well. Coach Abel has already shown that he can coach and run a successful cross country team, so him also coaching track will be a natural fit."

Head Cross Country coach Abel Spalding, who will also lead the Track & Field program, shared his excitement about building the program and its culture from the ground up.

"I'm excited to lead Spurgeon College Athletics into this new front on the track, opening up a new season of competition for the program," Spalding said. "Not only will it provide better opportunities for our existing distance runners, but it will also allow us to expand into the other track and field events and build those groups from the ground up. We talk a lot on the cross country team about using our athletic gifts as an opportunity to worship the Lord daily with the first fruits of our labor, and I'm looking forward to building that cultural foundation in the other event groups as well."

The Track & Field program will be open to both men's and women's student athletes and reflects Spurgeon College's continued investment in athletics, campus engagement, and Christ centered competition. Additional details regarding recruiting, events, and schedules will be shared as the Spring 2027 launch approaches.
