Spurgeon Knights Come Short in Volleyball Tailgate

Summary:

A spirited Spurgeon College took to the Mathena Student Center court in a packed gym filled with 205 fervent fans. The campus Student Life provided signs, snacks, and drinks for a fun tailgate experience. Cheerful supporters, family, and friends gathered to witness the Knights joust with Faith Baptist Bible in a thrilling volleyball encounter. Despite a robust showing, Spurgeon succumbed to Faith Baptist Bible in a three-set marathon.
 
How it Happened:

The Knights started strong, with Lizzie Deaton securing the first point with a killer jump. The atmosphere was electric as fans cheered their team on. Both teams fully committed to their play. FBB was a force to be reckoned with on the court, but Spurgeon's Lizzie Deaton, backed by the assists from Timry Goodman, responded fiercely. Despite a promising start, Spurgeon found themselves trailing by six points at the end of the first set.
 
Spurgeon came back stronger in the second set, with newcomers Madison Moyer and Faith Simmons proving instrumental in the team's offensive play. The Knights' Annaliese Barnes also showcased outstanding performance in blocks, contributing significantly to the team's defense. However, the second set proved to be another tough hurdle for the Knights, and FBB took the set 25-22.
 
Spurgeon fought valiantly in the third set, but the night belonged to FBB. They took the set 25-11, wrapping up the night's proceedings. Spurgeon fans are proud of their team's performance. The Knights showed great spirit and resilience, and their preparation for this season is evident. The season is still young, and there are plenty of games ahead!
 
Highlights:
  • Despite the loss, the Knights had some standout performances. Lizzie Deaton led the game in kills (9), a testament to her brilliant attacking prowess. She also contributed significantly in blocks, tying Annaliese Barnes with three each.
  • Directly behind Deaton, newcomer Madison Moyer made 7 kills. Another newcomer, Faith Simmons, tied in number of digs with Barnes (12) and took a couple of aces. Welcome to the team, Knights!
  • Timry Goodman put on a commendable performance, leading the game in assists (22). Her strategic play in setting up attacks was crucial to the Knights' offensive play.
  • It was a joy to commence a new season of women's volleyball at the Mathena Student Center, especially under the new coach, Lauren Allaway!
 
Up Next:
The Knights face Southwestern Adventist University on Aug 31st, at 8:30pm, in the Mathena Student Center. This is followed by another home game against Kansas Christian on Sept 3rd, at 6pm. Come cheer on your Knights!
