Knights Advance to National Championship with 93-85 Victory Over Manhattan Christian

The Spurgeon College men's basketball team (23-6) secured their spot in the national championship game with a hard-fought 93-85 comeback victory over Manhattan Christian College (21-8) on March 14, 2025, at the Mathena Student Center in Gladstone, MO. The Knights overcame an early deficit to outlast the Thunder in front of 145 passionate fans.

Second Half Surge Propels Knights to Victory

After trailing 47-39 at halftime, the Knights dominated the second half, outscoring Manhattan Christian 54-38 to secure the 8-point victory. Spurgeon College's defensive adjustments proved decisive, as they forced 11 turnovers in the second half and converted them into 23 total points off turnovers.

Drew Middleton led the Knights' comeback, scoring 17 of his game-high 27 points in the second half, including several clutch three-pointers that silenced Manhattan Christian's momentum. The Knights' depth also proved crucial, with their bench outscoring Manhattan Christian's 33-19.

Balanced Attack Secures Championship Berth

The Knights showcased their offensive versatility with four players scoring in double figures:

Despite shooting just 34.2% from the field for the game, the Knights capitalized at the free-throw line, converting 32-of-42 attempts (76.2%). Spurgeon College also dominated in transition, outscoring Manhattan Christian 35-11 in fast break points.

Thunder's Valiant Effort Falls Short

Manhattan Christian College put forth a valiant effort, led by Micah Lovett's 19 points and 6 assists, and Davis Rokey's double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds. The Thunder shot a respectable 39.7% from the field and 80.6% from the free-throw line, but couldn't overcome Spurgeon's second-half intensity.

Xavier Lucas added 12 points and 8 rebounds for Manhattan Christian, while Jaxon Hurla contributed 10 points and 4 assists in the losing effort.

Championship Awaits

With this semifinal victory, Spurgeon College advances to the national championship game, where they'll face the winner of the other semifinal matchup. The Knights' combination of offensive firepower, defensive pressure, and championship experience makes them a formidable contender as they seek to bring home the national title.
