Spurgeon College answered an early deficit with six unanswered first-half goals and never looked back, rolling to a 7-2 win over Emmaus University on Saturday afternoon at Jack Fish Field. Three Knights scored twice apiece and the visitors piled up 33 shots in front of 113 fans as Spurgeon evened its record at 2-1 heading into the conference opener.
How It Happened
Emmaus struck first, with Tucker Kapas finishing off an Evann Kumar service in the fourth minute for the game's opening goal. The lead lasted less than two minutes. Ty Dittbrenner leveled the match at 5:10, poking home moments after a Caleb Hawkins corner, and from there the Knights turned the first half into a procession.
Eduard Mangalagiu put Spurgeon ahead for good at 10:09, converting a two-man combination from Dittbrenner and Hawkins, then doubled his tally from the penalty spot at 19:02. Hawkins joined in at 23:42 off a David Beltran assist and added his own penalty at 31:03 to make it 5-1. Dittbrenner closed the half with his second at 40:51, finishing a build-up credited to Atahir Neff and Hawkins.
Spurgeon carried a 6-1 lead to the break despite trailing in the run of play for only those first 102 seconds.
Turning Point
The stretch between the 5th and 24th minutes decided it. After falling behind, the Knights scored four times in a 19-minute window — two from open play, one from the spot — and forced Emmaus into chasing the game for the remaining hour. Emmaus had its chances to stay in it, hitting the crossbar through Kapas at 26:52 and firing wide twice more before halftime, but by then the margin had grown past reach.
Second Half
The Knights kept the pressure on after the interval, outshooting Emmaus 20-4 over the final 45 minutes. Kapas pulled one back at 64:58 with an assist from John Thawng for his second of the afternoon, but Spurgeon restored the five-goal cushion at 82:43 when Rudy Ramirez finished a move started by Mangalagiu and David Thang.
Inside the Numbers
Spurgeon finished with a 33-11 edge in shots and a 14-4 advantage in shots on goal, along with a 6-2 margin in corner kicks. Dittbrenner led all players with nine shots, six on frame. Hawkins finished with two goals and two assists for a team-high four points, while Mangalagiu added two goals and an assist and Dittbrenner two goals and an assist. Four of Spurgeon's seven goals were multi-assist finishes, and the Knights piled up seven helpers on the day.
Lexi Spenst went the full 90 in goal for Spurgeon, facing four shots on target and making two saves. Lincoln LaBerge was busy at the other end, turning aside seven of the 14 shots he faced.
Kapas accounted for both Emmaus goals on six shots, three on target. Bennett Kreiner added two shots and Oliver Taylor one on frame. The Knights were whistled for 19 fouls to Emmaus' 12; the game's lone caution went to Emmaus' Jimmy McLaughlin at 56:25.
